PMR does an annual national survey on Managed Healthcare Companies in South Africa. Respondents rate the companies across the following 20 criteria on a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is poor and 10 is outstanding:

- Ability to manage unique member profile
- Black Economic Empowerment (BEE)
- Clinical expertise
- Confidentiality (trust)
- Ease of access to relevant information
- First call resolution of issues
- Knowledge of business and healthcare environment
- Management and integration of data
- Managerial expertise
- Meeting of expectations
- Negotiating strength
- Quality of the service
- Relationship with providers
- Reporting on results/interventions
- Reputation (i.e. perception of the company’s brand, integrity, CSI)
- Return-on-investment (ROI)
- Turnaround time of service received
- User-friendliness of systems
- Value-adding partnerships
The respondents are made up of a random national sample of 140 respondents comprising chairmen, principal officers, trustees, medical directors of medical scheme administrators, health risk managers employed by the medical scheme administrators, case fund managers employed by the medical scheme administrators, medical advisors and medical assessors.
